GSR general concepts

Q Why should we consider the triple bottom line in remediation?

  • Remediation in the past mainly focusing on being quick to achieve the delisting requirements and some potential negative impacts of the remedial work was not considered. GSR could be a tool to assist polluters to comprehensively consider all of the potential impacts of the environmental, social and economic aspect and realize sustainable and friendly remediation.

Q What can I learn from the environmental assessment result?

  • The result of the environmental footprint assessment can help you to understand the energy consumption, air pollutant emissions, water consumption, solid and liquid waste production and impacts to soil and ecosystem. Site managers can plan BMPs to mitigate environmental impacts of the remediation work.

Q What can I learn from the social assessment result?

  • The social assessment result is helpful to understand the health risk to remediation workers and site working personnel. Site managers can also strengthen communication by conducting a residents questionnaire to understand the concerns of local the local community.

Q What can I learn from the economy assessment result?

  • The overall economic influences could be revealed by the economy assessment result, such as overall economic influences, additional added values and the working opportunities created by the remediation project.

Q What kind of sites can implement GSR ?

  • GSR is a systematic thinking strategy which considers the influences on environmental, economic and social aspects caused by remediation activities. Therefore, the concept could be implemented in any kind of contaminated sites.

Q What are the benefits of implementing GSR?

  • GSR conduct remediation related work through a life-cycle point of view. By applying different tools, site managers will be able to identify the potential influences caused by remedial activities and establish optimization procedures through BMPs planning.

Q How to know the current stage of my site

  • If the remediation methods are not determined, then the site is classified as type I GSR sites, otherwise, the site is classified as type II GSR sites.

Q How to choose the assessment tools to be used?

  • For type I GSR sites, environmental, economic and social assessment tools can be used to evaluate the impacts of each remediation alternative. The decision supporting tool can help stakeholders to select a relatively sustainable remedy. BMPs for the selected remedy can be planned by the BMPs screening tool. For type II GSR sites, the environment footprint assessment tool can be used to identify the hot spots of remediation works, while corresponding BMPs can be select to alleviate the negative effects.

Q Who can join the remedy decision process?

  • GSR encourages to engage all stakeholders in the remedy decision process, including polluters, consultant, contractors for remediation, competent authorities, near-by residents and workers in the site.
